A true mixed bag. There are moments where this is charming and funny and then there are moments where it's awkward and cringeworthy. It's not as awful as you've been led to believe, and David Duchovney obviously has directorial talent, but it's not going to enter the pantheon of great coming-of-age movies anytime soon.
