Review of Hour of the Wolf (1968) by Ryan J — 08 May 2008
It is a fine exercise in surrealism with dark images meant to enter deeply into our minds, but sadly, for me, it was only partly successful.
Bergman presents the subconscious of the lead character who shuffles between reality and fiction and falls into bizarre nightmares and imaginations. All this is greatly achieved, but I did not feel the connection of what was supposed to be happening with the situation nor the characters.
In contrary, directors such as Bunuel and Lynch approach the same themes with more convincing results.
Hour of the Wolf, in my opinion, lacked the power that his other films have. All in all, being a Bergmans fan I was disappointed with Hour of the Wolf.
