Review of Hour of the Wolf (1968) by Joseph S — 29 Jun 2008
I think this may be one of Ingmar Bergman's best, it's one his most dark, horiffying, and visceral films about an artists decent into madness and how his hullucinations begin infecting his wife's mind as well.
The horror here isn't because of any big surprises, though their are a genuine horror moments, but because of how realistic and yet slightly paranoid and distorted everything becomes. The film is filled with tension, emptiness, immediacy, and strange cruelty and tenderness years before David Lynch was making it his M.
O. Definitely a must see if you like Bergman or noir films in general. This is Bergmen at his most surreal, this includes Persona. A bit bleaker than usual, but Max Von Sydow and Liv Ullman are both amazing, and light up another gloomy Bergman parable.
