Review of Hotel Rwanda (2004) by Santosh N — 11 Dec 2009
Hotel Rwanda was a very realistic depiction of the true events that occurred in Africa between the Hutu and the Tutsi tribes. Don Cheadle plays a hotel manager named Paul Rusesabagina who must face the struggles of refuge as well as many other problems that come about during the civil war that is going on in Rwanda.
For the most part, all of the acting was very good, especially Cheadle's performance. The whole film was brilliantly shot in Africa and actually contains some pretty disturbing scenes here and there of the senseless slaughtering of the Tutsi people.
guest appearance from Joaquin Phoenix and Nick Nolte add some nice flavor to the cast. The situations that Cheadle and his family encounter are very tense and ruthless as they try to shelter refugees of the Tutsi tribe.
The lack of support received by the UN troops shows to be quite a crisis as well. The strong will to live and the spirit of survival brought forth by Cheadle and his family is extraordinary. The thing that really got me about the movie is that it is all based on actual events.
It just amazes me that a family can live through such hardships. A brilliant film. I also really like the hotel itself, it is a very nice property, it almost made me sad seeing it get ransacked and destroyed.
4-starz.
