Review of Hotel Rwanda (2004) by Ryan M — 07 Mar 2010
A Hollywood-ised story with an impressively controlled performance by Don Cheadle that works well as decent entertainment without being too bleak, but the limited view of the genocide in Rwanda (it solely focuses on Paul Rusesabagina's situation, most of the violence occuring offscreen) ultimately hampers the film, as it doesn't try to examine why this conflict started in the first place, how it spun so out of control and it failed to fully explore why the UN wanted to stay out of it for so long.
The schmaltz factor is mostly kept under wraps, but it's still worth watching for Cheadle's performance, but just don't take everything you see in this film as the ultimate truth on the situation.
