Review of Hotel Artemis (2018) by Andrew J — 30 Nov 2018
I LOVED this movie. Had not seen a trailer so had no expectations apart from having heard a great interview with composer Cliff Martinez on Edith Bowman's "Soundtracking" podcast - anyway.
From the first moments it was clear that this film knew what it was. Like Escape from New York for millenials, there was enough backstory to create tension but it never became bogged down, I loved all the characters, I found the world believable, the places where budget seemed to be thin with regard to VFX or numbers of extras just worked for me, as a person who grew up watching 1980's Doctor Who - none of that matters if the story is good and this story RIPS along.
The vulnerable Jodie Foster is the tender heart of this rip snorting futuristic gangster story and I love her and I loved the movie.
