Review of Hot Tub Time Machine (2010) by Michael V — 16 Nov 2011
Making a great comedy can be hard to do. Getting the right timing. Make the right gross out moments without making the whole movie revolve around one scene. Then you have to balance vulgar language and nudity to make the movie not be just about that either.
The naughty parts have to be valid and not there for the boob factor. This movie worked it's way through those traps without breaking a sweat. The laughs were all in the right spots, hit the right notes, and kept on coming.
What more can you ask for in a comedy? What I particularly enjoyed was how they played off the clichà (C)s that are usually associated with time travel movies. Also, the eighties references weren't ridiculous; they were just enough to make it work, and it seems like the writers did a lot of weeding to pick only the jokes that worked.
Very refreshing since there are so many idiotic comedies that think they're more funny than they are. Rob Corddry owned this movie. His performance is the main reason to invest some time watching this.
Then you get all these little parts in it that seem to be inside jokes and stories that you really never find out what they are talking about. Whispering great white buffalo, what is contained in the box in John Cusack's closet marked Cinncinati.
I can't see there being a better comedy then this for the rest of 2010.
