Review of Hot Tub Time Machine (2010) by Donnie B — 13 Nov 2011
The previews of this movie were hysterical and it looked like it was going to be full of moments that would make me laugh so hard my stomach would hurt. But I did, however, predict that it would either be really funny or really bad.
After bootlegging this, I somehow came to a medium. I wouldn't say it's bad. I wouldn't even say it's not funny. At times it is, in fact, hilarious. Are most of the funniest moments the ones from the previews? Yep.
What bothered me about it was that with the title it was obviously meant to be strictly comedy, but towards the end of the movie it tries to take itself a little too seriously with some of the characters and their depressions.
It actually had a great moral about getting old and appreciating good memories and your life then as well as now. But I wasn't looking for a moral. Yeah, it was funny but once the credits rolled I wasn't so sure how I felt.
I think I need to just stop analyzing it and just take it for what it is. Overall, it was just a personal disappointment a little bit to me, since I hyped it so hard. But thinking back on it, it was funny; very funny, in fact.
And the previews somewhat hit the nail on the head saying "so stupid it's brilliant" and at times you definitely feel the comic genius. In short, this is basically the "college humor"s version of Back to the Future.
It's the exact same premise just with a lot of dirty jokes. I do recommend it, unless you hyped it like I did, but I'll give it time... I'll watch it again.
