Review of Hot Tub Time Machine (2010) by Charlie L — 05 Mar 2012
I really wanted to love this more. It falls into the sub-genre I most adore: time travel/alternate reality gives perspective to your reality. It's got a great cast. It rewinds to the EIGHTIES! It's got George McFly in it, for God's sake! And it's not a total dud.
It's actually pretty good in parts. But "The Hangover Effect" trades almost all inherent sweetness for gross out shock-schlock, almost all straight character dialogue for shouty personal insults.
..one key protagonist is portrayed as such a horrible bastard that his redemption seems a little undeserved. On the plus side, you've got a story that - while very derivative of multiple sci-fi efforts - acknowledges this derivation and puts it into a setting - and with characters - that the theme's never seen before.
It's certainly original - and when not being nasty to itself - it can be very funny. It's not Back to the Future, by any means. But it's a lot more memorable than most of my visits to a hot tub.
