Review of Hot Tub Time Machine (2010) by Tom H — 14 Nov 2013
It's important to know exactly where you stand with this film. Hot Tub Time Machine doesn't take itself seriously so therefore - so shouldn't you. It's an 80's saturated, crude and rude balls out comedy that rolls along nicely with some great characters that all add a little something to tickle the funny bone.
We follow the story of three friends - Adam (John Cusack), Lou (Rob Corddry), and Nick (Craig Robinson) - and Adam's nephew, Jacob (Clark Duke), who take a trip to a resort they used to go to as teenagers. Here they find their room has a hot tub and - yes you guessed it... they are transported back to 1986. They have to relive the events of their past to return to 2010. Here we are witness to string of funnies and silliness that keep a smile on your face and laughter never far away. As the characters stories and decisions cross paths hilarity always follows.
Directed by Steve Pink who wrote the screenplay for 'Grosse Pointe Blank' (an utterly superb film) he certainly knows how to bring forth the laughter and it's packed with tons of 80's nostalgia that makes this a film very apt for the 30+ audience.
Overall I was left with a smile but Hot Tub Time Machine is certainly not groundbreaking or amazing. It is what it is and it relishes in its silliness. It won't be for everyone but if you want some silly escapism for 90 mins then this will definitely do the job.
