Review of Hot Fuzz (2007) by Angelo J — 01 Jul 2014
Is it a neverending 2 hours of bad bait-and-switch jokes, a post-modern disaster, or a bizarrely elaborate action comedy spoof of The Wicker Man? Well, its all of those. A movie that manages to pointlessly reference everything from Straw Dogs to Goodfellas to Sergio Leone westerns to Life Is Sweet (?!). Movies like this really wear on me because (1) I hate having to feel like a grumpy curmudgeon for sitting through a lauded comedy without laughing once, and (2) I hate to see legitimate potential wasted. A great cast is underutilized, and any potential the concept had was squandered by the black hole that is Edgar Wright. I still stand in the minority on this matter, but flat direction compensated for by flashy (but usually inept) editing does not elevate material to comedic gold. Most of this film's pacing is so woefully disjointed and awkward that it makes me want to get behind an AVID system so bad just to fix it.
Watch Jackie Chan's marvelously thrilling and funny Police Story instead. Heck, even the unintentional parody of The Wicker Man (this being the Nic Cage fronted remake) brings more laughs to the table.
Sorry, folks.
