Review of Hot Fuzz (2007) by Magnus G — 11 Dec 2014
Hot Fuzz follows in the footsteps of its predecessor Shaun of the Dead as a send-up to buddy cop films from the 80s and the films of John Woo. Staging an action comedy in the mundane environment of a small English town is just genius and provides some incredible laugh out loud moments.
The film knows how absurd it is which is what makes it such a fun film to watch. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost remain a great duo on screen together and it's a lot of fun watching the two interact with one another with their differing personalities, another feature of the buddy cop films that this satires.
The film lacks some of the effect that Shaun of the Dead had and feels less like a character piece than that film which is why I consider it to be slightly weaker as a film. But in many areas, this is funnier and more entertaining.
With the Cornetto trilogy and Scott Pilgrim (as well as the TV series Spaced), Edgar Wright has certainly proven what a masterful comedy director he can be.
