Huh, turns out the 3rd degrees burns on the 79-year old woman's legs were actually pretty nasty... and the $2.9 million settlement--which was reduced to something around 500K--was the result of a UNANIMOUS decision of a 12-person New Mexico jury who came up with the $2.9 million figure (based on 2-days of coffee sales because the company had ignored 700 previous complaints about the 180-degree coffee) for punitive damages--the woman was NOT asking for anywhere near that. And after the lawsuit, McDonald's lowered their coffee by ten degrees with no loss in sales.
And no, the woman was NOT driving the car. but rather in the passenger seat of a PARKED car. So why do we all walk around thinking this is a poster case for frivilous lawsuits? This move explains why......
