Review of Hostel: Part II (2007) by Matthew R — 27 Jul 2014
He Eli. Do you think that maybe you should have put more thought into the purpose of making these hostel movies? Aren't they supposed to derive entertainment from the acute feeling of horror, entrapment and desperation? At the bottom of the scum heap of human capability lies what people perform in hostel.
The first movie was serious in it's portrayal and terrifying in that regard. The realism, the depression and the desperation for life. Everything from the death of the first movies hero, to the accidental death of a victim, to Todd's death, to the strange turn of the characters was absolutely comedic.
Yes, the average audience is still horrified by what is depicted, but instead of sympathizing with the expected horror of the audience, we get this ridiculous feeling that the director is having too much fun to actually bother with making a serious film.
I mean, it starts with a comical beheading, and ends with a comical beheading. Hell, they gave up on any smidgen of credibility when at the end we get happy fiddle music and a lighthearted football match with a severed head.
Absolutely nothing credible or relatable about some of the characters in this film.
