Review of Hostel (2006) by Spencer D — 01 Jan 2013
Not bad, though I have to say, I had been led to believe it far more graphic than it really is. Most of the really nasty stuff is off screen, not that it makes the scenes any less disturbing. I just thought I was definitely going to be completely grossed out, which I wasn't at all.
Good horror, though; the score was effective, and there were some excellent scares. Another thing, though, is that I thought 'Hostel' was supposed to be all business, in other words, not as funny and entertaining as it is.
I didn't just laugh at how stupid I thought everything was like some (annoying) people do, but there were a few moments when it just seemed like you were supposed to laugh. Not necessarily a bad thing, but it did make me slightly less afraid and nervous.
I'd say it was worth the watch, and will appeal to other horror freaks and psychopaths. As long as you don't mind the sex and nudity, which there is an abundance of. (The first three quarters of the movie consists largely of this, with the last quarter reserved for torture and murder.
) Hostel Part II, here I come.
