Review of Horsemen (2009) by Brendan A — 03 Aug 2010
In Oz/NZ this movie's DVD title is "Horsemen Of The Apocalypse". A miscast Dennis Quaid plays Aidan Breslin, a cop who recently lost his wife to cancer and has buried himself in his work to cope- although he is neglecting the needs of his two sons. Breslin's latest case proves to be one of his most demanding- a series of fetishistic serial killings dealing with bodily modification and S&M equipment which turn out to have links to the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse from the Bible. Quite a leap!
"Horsemen" is basically a less interesting, less intelligent "Se7en" with a religious twist.
Totally predictable (especially the conclusion) despite some good gore scenes. Quaid's constant sneering makes him look like a stroke victim. Pucci- who was excellent in the indie cult fave "Thumbsucker"- more or less spends his screen time whining about how lousy a father Quaid is. No wonder this went straight to DVD. The gorgeous Zhang Ziyi is similarly miscast in a villanous role. You're better off re-watching one of the "Saw" movies instead. At least that way you know the goods get delivered- and your intelligence isn't insulted either.
