Review of Horsemen (2009) by John M — 03 May 2011
A cheap Se7en knockoff. A detective (Dennis Quaid) is assigned to investigate a number of grisly murders, all interconnected with the same themes, and all with the words "come and see" written around the crime scene.
Quaid soon finds out that it's something bigger, with the people committing these murders thinking that they are The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Can Dennis Quaid solve the case before his family life becomes completely irreparable? Is it just me or is it with every role Dennis Quaid takes, he looks considerably more tired and more cranky? I thought his crabby demeanor peaked with Vantage Point, but I was wrong.
I like Ziyi Zhang, but English is not her strong suit. I also like Clifton Collins Jr., but his character, along with every major role in the movie, is pretty stock and cardboard. Horsemen started off better than I was expecting, hooking (no pun, I swear) me in with some really brutal crime scenes, but then it got repetitive, and then started losing me as it approached the third act, and then derailed completely with an undeserved message with its ending.
Any way you slice it, you're much better off watching the obvious source material: Se7en.
