Review of Horrible Bosses 2 (2014) by Rachael S — 15 Feb 2015
A pointless sequel nobody asked for that changes the formula up slightly but goes way overboard in dumbing down the lead characters to the point of cartoon and it's not believable for a second. The cast all return, with some great new additions like Christoph Waltz and Chris Pine but the former is under-used while Pine is admittedly the best part of the film, clearly having fun and relishing his douchebag role! The story this time feels lazy and a sequel was something I never expected to see from this crew, and the jokes are chuckle-worthy at best.
Jennifer Aniston amps her character up and I'll always laugh at her talking dirty, but how she enters the film is straight-up ridiculous and so convenient. I will say the ending had some nice surprises and the boys' plan to get away with kidnapping was inspired, but the movie just didn't work for me and Sudeikis and Day's characters are basically punchlines at this point, not existing in reality at all.
Very disappointing considering how much I enjoyed the first film!
