Review of Hope Springs (2012) by Karyl K — 24 Mar 2013
I think I am the right demographic for this movie: married 30 years to the same fella. But I found this movie both boring and squirm-inducing. I did not relate to Streep's roaring mouse character at all, and Jones' golf-obsessed accountant was pretty blank as well.
The ability to play quietly dull characters is just that. I was not rooting for these two. At several points during these characters' journey of sexual healing, I found myself cringing, the image of the "Silent Scream" briefly flitting through my mind.
I wanted to run home to my husband to exclaim, "We have a totally awesome marriage!" Made even more awesome by the fact that nobody is going to stumble into a theatre and watch it in all its geriatric glory.
There is nothing wrong with any of the performances in this movie; it is the story itself that is too dull to be redeemed. I haven't been this underwhelmed since "The Iron Lady." I know Streep won the Oscar for that other quietly boring geriatric performance -- could the washing-the-teacup symbolism have been more obvious? Streep was better on Andy Cohen's show than she was in either of these movies.
