Review of Hoosiers (1986) by Kevin B — 20 Apr 2008

Sports movies don't get any better than this. Hoosiers may seem cliche now, but it was the original cliche. An oft-copied formula is used in this movie, but the execution and performances are incredible. A top notch movie for my 100th review.

The story is of Indiana basketball. Coach Norman Dale is hired to turn around the Hoosiers basketball team. But he'll have to do it without the help of the star player, Jimmy Chitwood. Jimmy liked the old coach, and won't play for Coach Dale. Also encouraging Jimmy not to play is Myra Fleener. She thinks Jimmy needs to focus on his studies, and not concern himself with a season of basketball. Coach Dale must overcome all these obstacles, including an alcoholic assistant coach, to take his team to the championship.

Gene Hackman gives the definitive coach performance. Every sports movie needs one, and Hackman's is where you set the bar. I have yet to see a better performance like this. A truly special performance. Dennis Hopper was nominated for an Academy Award for his role as Shooter. One of his very best, and a performance that adds depth to the movie. Barbara Hershey plays Coach Dale's love interest, Myra. A standard character, but well acted.

Overall, this movie is in my top 5 favorites of all time. It's just a little scene here, a conversation there, that make the movie the best. Also listen for the great score by Jerry Goldsmith, very memorable music. A real delight.

"If you put your effort and concentration into playing to your potential, to be the best that you can be, I don't care what the scoreboard says at the end of the game, in my book we're gonna be winners." 10/10.
