Review of Hoosiers (1986) by Gary J — 07 Jan 2011
Hoosiers has a great story and a fine performance by Gene Hackman. Nowadays, it's predictable, but everyone likes a good underdog story (unless you're a heartless toad). Even from the opening pre-dawn shots of the coach driving to his first day on the job, it portrays the Midwest in such a way that feels real.
It's an 80's movie about the 50's and it feels authentic. I don't think the movie is completely flawless, though. In the first half, it seems like the success of the team rode on getting a player who was called "the god of basketball" rather than the coach rallying his team.
In fact, the coach got thrown out of plenty of games. But it's a gripping movie along the lines of Rudy and Remember the Titans. Funny and inspiring, Hoosiers is easily one of the best basketball movies ever made.
