Hoop Dreams is an amazing dose of reality and an amazing testament to the power of the human spirit. The filmmakers follow two inner city kids from low income families as they pursue their dreams of making it to the NBA. This film was pretty much a cultural phenomenon when it came out in 1994, and for good reason. The trials and triumphs of the two kids as we follow them through high school and into their junior college year and chock full of twists and turns that only real life can deliver. You can't fake this stuff. This is real. And at times it's heartbreaking. But at others it's inspirational and uplifting.

I had a consistent reality check while watching this. Compared to the lives of these two families living in rough Chicago neighborhoods, and struggles to get a job and keep a job and so on, I feel, living in Alberta in the neighborhood I do, pampered. Really makes me want to quit bitching about what I don't have and just keep my focus on what I do and be thankful for where I am.
