Review of Hoop Dreams (1994) by Joshua T — 31 Dec 2009
I think my expectations were too high for this film ("Best documentary ever...". Maybe if I loved basketball a little more, or grew up exposed to inner-city life, this film would have resonated more and dragged a little less.
This is an in-depth look at 2 basketball potentials pursuing the eponymous dream, and at the ups and down of life in inner-city life in Chicago. The movie felt real, and the emotions truly life-reflective (not forged in the editing room, like the rather entertaining but manipulative 'King of Kong').
But I couldnt help but think that the filmmaker, and audience, wouldnt have appreciated this more if one of the youths hadnt turned out to be Kobe or LeBron.
