Review of Hoop Dreams (1994) by Marco F — 28 Sep 2010
HOOP DREAMS is one of the greatest experiences I've ever had watching a movie. Rarely have I been so fascinated and drawn in by a movie. This movie takes an incredible amount of unexpected twists and turns; and more unexpected things happen in this movie and as time went on, I became more and more compelled by the extraordinary and unfortunate things that happen in these 2 boys' lives.
I am still in amazement and shock of how things that I could not believe happening in a fictional film actually happen in this movie. It really is... well I can't find the words to describe it.
HOOP DREAMS is the best documentary ever made since NANOOK OF THE NORTH. And that's as high as praise gets. This is a heartbreaking, sad and above all, fascinating look at life in America- and few, if any films of its time are as enthralling, exciting and absorbing as this movie.
