Review of Hoop Dreams (1994) by Cody P — 21 Jan 2011
An astounding achievement in documentary filmmaking. The film gives us a deeply personal look into the lives of two aspiring basketball stars, Arthur Agee and William Gates. While their paths and struggles differ, they both paint a realistic, sometimes dark and many times optimistic picture of urban life in America.
I'm not sure if a documentary will ever be so personal again, as the Gates and Agee families were taped four over 4 years of their lives, but the stories of these two boys paints the best picture of what it takes to come out of the slums and try to make it in the world as an NBA star, but more often just make it out.
