I freaking love documentaries. I also freaking love basketball. So upon seeing there was a movie that combined both of those loves I was needless to say, pretty pumped to check it out. Hoop Dreams follows two inner city high-school basketball players and their families on their hopes to make it to the NBA.
What I expected and what I saw were two different things. While I did get my basketball fix, I was also shown an intimate look at their lives. We are with these people for almost three hours and by the end you feel like you've known them for years.
You feel their pain when they miss game winning free throws, or when you see the father of one of them getting drugs within the sight of his son. You feel their excitement as one makes it to the state semi-finals, and when one of the mothers gets her nursing license.
Even after seeing the update at the end of the film about what they did at their different colleges, I still did research to find out what they were doing recently. That's the sign of a great documentary, and this documentary is probably my favorite of all-time.
