Review of Hook (1991) by Marco F — 17 Aug 2014
For a man who has made so many great entertainments, HOOK is definitely not Steven Spielberg's finest hour. In fact, I may go so far to call it his worst ever movie, definitely one of his worst films. But it's not what I would call a bad film- it's a fair film, at best.
As much as I liked the consistently brilliant John Williams's soundtrack (by itself, however. With the movie, it heightens the sappy factor a whole lot) and the lively, adventurous feel, the film is directed on autopilot and doesn't look very good. There is also a lot of needlessly complicated and cumbersome exposition here- why that is for a relatively simple story, I don't know. There are some things to like, but there are more things not to like.
