Review of Honeydripper (2007) by Thomas L — 07 Jan 2008
Not one of John Sayles' best works, but it's okay. It's worth seeing at least once, for no other reason than the cast. It's like a who's who of African-American actors and musicians.
As with most Sayles films, this film is very much of a particular time and place. In this case it's October (cotton picking season) 1950 in the town of Harmony, Butler County, Alabama. Danny Glover plays Pinetop Purvis (great name), the proprietor of a juke joint that's on the verge of going out of business.
The only hope is an unknown musician named Sonny, whose forte is some electric guitar doohickey that Pinetop doesn't understand very much. Yeah, the film's kind of predictable, but as usual Sayles has a vast array of interesting characters who are, as I said above, portrayed by the creme de la African creme.
