Review of Honeydripper (2007) by Matt H — 17 Jan 2009
Fantastic indie film set in a rural Alabama town in early 1950. References to Robert Johnson and Pinetop Perkins (the nick-namesake of Danny Glover's lead character) give it a historical grounding.
The dawn of the electric-guitar blues (the framework for rock n' roll) is the wave of the future for a town frozen in time. When a piano-playing bar owner on the verge of losing it all books the popular "Guitar Sam" for a gig, he expects a single Saturday night to solve all of his problems.
..until the talent doesn't show up. How he gets out of that jam is the krux of the movie. A conflicted wife, an optimistic daughter and a racist (but black music and fried chicken-loving) sheriff figure in as well.
Don't expect a music-filled experience until the second half, but the buildup is worth the wait.
