Review of Honeydripper (2007) by Richard S — 03 Aug 2008
Slow like honey without being heavy with mood, Sayles latest lumbers to a predictable finish. This isn't terrible work- just mediocre. It's the standard "save the business" setup, but with reliable actors and a decidedly stage bound feel.
This is story is about the blues going electric, so where is the energy? It's only found in the finale, but that comes nearly two hours too late. This is well intentioned filmmaking, but somehow Sayles forgot that the line between universal and cliche characters is a very fine one.
