Review of Home Alone (1990) by Ben L — 03 Nov 2016
Is this the best Christmas film of all time? In my eyes, I think so. It's possibly even my most watched movie ever if I think of the countless times I've viewed it in my childhood and into present day.
Clearly one of those things you grow up loving, and will always bring back fond memories. Regardless of the burglary concept, it has a feel good vibe with a central character that everyone wants to be - A child in a parent-free mansion where just about anything goes.
The fact he has the beating of the bumbling thieves also shows a macho like quality that every young boy aspires to be like - A real man of the house. The slapstick elements are predictable but amusing.
We all know it would never happen in reality but it's created a fantasy for kids that makes them and their families just fall in love with this production. The soundtrack infuses the Christmas feeling and when you see this on TV, you just can't help but get in the festive spirit.
This essentially was the making of Macauley Culkin and is one of the best examples of a child star. His cheeky chappy persona was perfect for the role - so good that the actor probably found it difficult to get away from the stereotype, with his career eventually suffering as a result.
There really is nothing negative to say about this. I've pretty much memorised all the lines, so for those who haven't had the pleasure of seeing it, I could probably recite it to you off the top of my head.
Failing that, just watch it yourself, as it's a real Xmas cracker :).
