Review of Holy Rollers (2010) by Laurent P — 06 Nov 2010
I realize the timing of this review (movie starring Jesse Eisenberg) but I'd actually watched this one before The Social Network. Another solid performance! Eisenberg has an ability to play these roles and instantly commiserate sympathy from the audience.
Unfortunately (I think), this post will probably be the first time most of you hear about this film. Kevin Asch's feature-length directorial debut is a story inspired by true events when Jews were recruited to smuggle ecstasy into the U.S of A; fascinating. This is what first drew me to watching the film. Holy Rollers might sound like a religious twist on a teen comedy about a group of bowlers but let me assure you its quite the opposite. I enjoyed every second.
Everything from the appropriately somber cinematography to the sensitive nature of religion and drugs... you definitely get your bang for your buck on this one. The carefully paced disintegration of Sam Gold (Jesse Eisenberg) is painful to watch but that's what keeps us glue to the screen; his first visit to Europe, smuggling of "medicine" to falling in love with the kingpin's girlfriend- DICEY. To re-cap, I highly recommend Holy Rollers and encourage you to post your thoughts here after :).
