Review of Holy Motors (2012) by Nate Z — 17 Nov 2012
What would cinema be without Leos Carax? Here, he does everything I'd dreamed he had done, with a million other things I never could've dreamed about. And this is his talent. Without him, could you have dreamed about tombstones with names replaced by links to the deceased's personal websites? Could you have dreamed about the Beast with a mouthful of blood licking Beauty's armpit and carrying her away? Could you have imagined on screen two people tangled in an erotic dance while wearing tight leather motion capture suits? Leos Carax is always there to remind you what we haven't done in movies yet.
How much we need to start doing. Cinema fuels the dreams. And this is a celebration of possibility, of the imagination. Come dream with him, and Oscar/Denis Lavant, who, despite the years, still plays the everyman/outcast with as lovely a recklessness and energetic spirit than ever before.
Come sit in the dark and watch Carax's dreams on screen. There's nothing quite as beautiful.
