Review of Holy Motors (2012) by Kyle T — 27 Feb 2013
I really don't know what I can say without giving too much away here. I mean, this is just a very creative film about the world of acting, with some great themes, an interesting take on storytelling, beautiful art design, and a spectacular central performance by Denis Lavant.
The film shifts its tone with every bit, which is great as that was what it was trying to do. It is a very episodic film, and the narrative shifts while keeping the same characters with every central scene, and it is spectacular.
Now, it definitely follows some "art film tropes" that to some may seem to be there for shock, or they themselves might just "not get it" (and I mean that sincerely, not putting people down or anything).
I think it is one of the most interesting films of the year, and the direction by Leos Carax is exceptional. Seriously, the way it tells the story of an actor is so innovative. This visual masterpiece with an innovative narrative is one that is not to miss.
