Review of Holy Motors (2012) by Markku R — 14 Apr 2013
Phil Villareal has it perfectly. This is a movie that chooses to push the label of "surreal" and "quirky" to the extreme and critics appear to love Holy Motors for it. Personally, I could only make it 35 minutes into this movie before opting to turn it off.
I wanted to turn it off 20 minutes in but held out in the hopes something would help me understand what was happening. Nothing made sense and little held my attention beyond the thought, "Is there something I am missing?!" Perhaps the remaining 80 minutes would have established some sort of path to follow but the first 35 failed so incredibly to spark any sort of genuine interest that I couldn't continue on in the hopes that some sort of narrative that actually made sense.
On a positive note, the movie is visually stunning. If you want a two hours long piece of art, this is for you. Everyone else, stay FAR away.
