Review of Holy Motors (2012) by Charles R — 30 Jun 2013
A thoroughly insane (and, for the most part, enjoyable) "high" art film that follows one 'actor/cosplayer' through Paris as he fulfills a series of appointments for his nameless employers.
While the story is far more active and 'entertaining' than most typical "strange-for-the-sake-of-strangeness" arthouse films (we're treated to a Lynch-ian mystery, the weirdest sex scene in recent film history, and a phenomenally bad-ass accordion jam), the real treat is in the cinematography and the visually stunning transformations of lead Lavant as he settles into a litany of characters throughout the film.
Besides the ambiguity of the premise and some slightly overlong 'appointments', this is one self-important purposefully-zany arthouse film I wouldn't mind watching again. 4/5 and not just because of the kinky leather motion-capture sex.
