Review of Holmes & Watson (2018) by Austin R — 28 Dec 2018
I can tell you what to expect. I'm not a Will F fan, great comedian, my sort of comedy, but he goes over the top into, I presume, somebody satisfying vileness. Worse than little Brittan, where one of the main leads labeled it comedian's comedy, but what about everybody else? It's this which stops Will from being a truly great actor like the off beat comedian of old Tom Hanks (believe it or not, see his early 80's work).
So, what is it, off beat american comedy applied over British comedy going too far. British comedy works because they withstrain themselves, use tension on the joke, channel and direct themselves. I was looking at a bit of the American comedy overlay in this, but Will trying to polish his succulent bitch vegetable, encouraging Watson to kill himself off handedly repeatedly and trying to pump the queen, are all classic examples of over reach, even Watson trying to hold the Queens hand, needy. Take them away, and other parts of the dead Queen V incident, and yeah, it's better. Put it this way, without those I could give it an extra star, or two. I wouldn't mind seeing a second film a little toned down in more British style (British Comedy School, and then learn to play with that). A new Cool Will 2.
The rest of the film, OK, a bit muddling in parts, three stars. Appeals to certain people, and not to others (like reviews in here). So, don't mistake it for a terrible movie, unless its not your cup of tea.
