Review of Hollywoodland (2006) by Markus H — 24 May 2008
This movie is based around the apparent suicide of "Superman" star George Reeves, which to this day remains an unsolved mystery. The film focuses on the detective trying to solve the case played astonishingly by Adrian Brody with flashbacks of the late actors life played also quite impressively by Ben Affleck.
Both actors give career defining performances as do Diane Lane as the actors' mistress and Bob Hoskins as the seedy MGM executive and the husband of Lane. Any one that disses Affeck for "Phantoms" needs to add this film to their list as required viewing.
The film is very well written and carefully directed, never giving too much away, or answering all the questions for you, and that's why it works so well. It lets you come up with your own conclusions, only showing you the evidence along the way.
This film left me thinking of it long afterwards and eager to talk about what I has just saw, so that is usually evidence of a well made and powerful film.
