Review of Hollywood Ending (2002) by Særún G — 23 Mar 2009
Using blindness as a metaphor, this clever film finds Allen as a washed up director who gets a shot at directing a big budget film to revive his career. On recommendation of his ex wife (Leoni), who is dating the big Hollywood exec.
footing the bill, Allen's character Val goes psychosomatically blind from the stress of it all. What ensues is pitch perfect comedy as the 'blind' director attempts to shoot the film without anyone knowing.
This film is a mirror of Woody's personal life where art imitates life; scenes of his battered relationships with his children, his movies flopping in the states but hitting it big in Europe, failed marriages and ex wives, it's all here.
Woody is great in the role, plays the comedy of being blind flawlessly and yes, the movie has a 'Hollywood' ending of sorts. A hidden gem in the canon of a gifted talent.
