Review of Holiday Inn (1942) by John R — 21 Jul 2008
Looked askance at today because of political incorrectness (there is a black face minstrel number that admittedly is offensive to modern African American sensibilities), the film is still very, very good.
Irving Berlin's music is top notch, with his idea about a hotel that would only be open on holidays. Astaire is superb, as usual, and even Bing, who was such a celebrity but really not much of a singer or actor, come shining through.
Of course, this is the film that gave us the song "White Christmas," along with "Happy Holidays," "Easter Parade" and the immortal "Be Careful, It's My Heart." This is part of American Folklore.
