Review of Hoffa (1992) by Jluis_001 — 05 Feb 2022
So far this is the most serious film I've seen from Danny DeVito as a director. But what struck me as a bit odd despite Jack Nicholson's more than solid performance as Jimmy Hoffa, is that DeVito who also stars in this film, is that he gave himself the most important weight in the story because the way we see Hoffa is through his character.
Sure, we see what Nicholson does with the character through his performance, but the concept of the film is more about what DeVito's character plays himself in the plot, which creates a barrier between what you might personally interpret about Hoffa, especially if you know who he was, and what the film idealizes about him.
It's worth seeing for the performances, especially Nicholson's. The rest is pretty middling.
