Review of Hocus Pocus (1993) by Crystal L — 27 Oct 2012
This movie is not perfect. Parts of it feel quite dated to a modern audience that didn't grow up watching the film; the two teen leads, Max and Allison, really aren't very good characters; and a lot of the extras overact like crazy.
Those downsides barely even matter, though. Dani (Max's 8-yr-old sister) and Binx (a talking cat) really steal the show. They have a lot of heart. The three witch sisters are also fantastic. Winifred and Mary are hilarious, and Sarah is adorable in her ditziness. And, of course, the songs (courtesy of Winifred and Sarah) are a ton of fun.
Dated or not, sort-of-cheesy or not, this movie is still one of my Halloween standards, and I try to watch it at least once every October. It's fun, if scary, for kids, and can induce nostalgia in young adults. Even older viewers should get a few chuckles from Winifred and Max and Dani's parents.
