Review of Hitman Hart: Wrestling with Shadows (1998) by Jason B — 02 Feb 2008
I give this a 3 and I'll explain. The film is actually really interesting. It's meant to show Bret Hart during the most tumultuous time for him in WWF. It is meant to show how he got "screwed".
What it really shows and what I find interesting, is a bitter man who can't separate the fantasy of his job from the reality of his person. This film shows how arrogant and self involved Bret Hart was.
How he truly believed he was his wrestling character and, as Vince McMahon has said, "Bret Hart screwed Bret Hart." This film makes that extremely apparent. The 3 is more a commentary on the fact that it tries to present itself as something other than a man whose ego has gone to his head.
Bret Hart fans will rage if you try to point out how absolutely pathetic Bret looks in this film but the reality is caught on tape. He brought about his downfall in wrestling and this film captures the start of his fall.
If you can take off your Hitman shades and watch the film with clear eyes you'll see a very interesting documentary, otherwise you'll simply just miss the boat.
