Review of Hitman Hart: Wrestling with Shadows (1998) by Justin Y — 31 May 2009
Over-rated. While Bret's story is tragic, I think the portrayal of Vince is unfair and at times over-the-top. The good thing about the movie is it gives a good insight into what goes on making behind a wrestling show and how he himself got into the business, as well as some background on the famous Hart Dungeon. Bret it seems fails to get why his "eat your vitamins say your prayers" stuff failed. Well Bret it failed coz it got predictable, and society was changing and needed anti-heroes like SCSA and Michaels. The goody-goody sometimes just didnt work, and crying a river over it doesnt work. As a pro, you give the audience what they want instead of moaning about it. Bret to me here showed everything that is wrong with a people today, they just resist change even when its needed and wanted, and stick to "fond memories" of the past. Evolution and adaptation Bret, that's how any business survives and that's what WWF did.
Watch the movie for the backstage stuff, but dont buy Bret's nonsense on the attitude era and Montreal, if he was running his own company with the livelihood of so many people dependent on it it would run into the ground.
