Review of His Girl Friday (1940) by Ben W — 29 Dec 2008
Entertaining, yes. Particularly great filmmaking....less so. But who cant love Cary Grant? This is one of the fastest talking movies out there. I defy you to catch everything thats said in one viewing.
Its quick and clever. No particularly incredible performances: Grant in his usual type role, Rosalind Russell, while maintaining the plot does little else to hold our attention. The dialog is superb, but the plot, characters, and (dare I say) message is pretty much completely at the service of making things funny.
but hawks knew how to entertain so the film gets some credit.
