Review of His Girl Friday (1940) by Edgar C — 17 Apr 2010
Half commentary against the gossipy ambitions of mindless journalism, half screwball comedy about the impactful influence of a woman's enchanting talents over defenseless men and the resulting emotional attachment to marriage and jealousy, Hawks hits the gas and steers the wheel of the vehicle of fucking dialogue brilliance mindlessly, directing what may be the most fastly paced masterpiece in motion picture history! Rosalind Russell's jaw-dropping multiphacetic embodiment of the female figure amongst a male environment driven by banal goals is here, in its full glory. Ninety two minutes of non-stop entertainment is what we get. Considered as a phony garbage before, regarded as a comedy classic now, this is a triumph for every single human being that ever became involved in its production. This is among the best 100 screenplays ever written. Full stop.
99/100.
