Review of Hillbilly Elegy (2020) by Gaereon — 27 Nov 2020
It seems the critics would prefer to turn a blind eye to the subject matter of this film. The plight of the rural poor is not something that often garners attention because its not something one can get noticed for caring about.
It is a well-written and acted film. For a college graduate from similar circumstances it presents a fairly accurate depiction of its subject. It was a good watch that held my attention for the whole movie.
The only thing that made it hard to watch were the sore spots it hit. I surmise the reason its positive aspects fell to be noticed by critics was due to their desire to look towards films that fit into a more privileged worldview that can overlook the suffering of certain groups.
