Review of Highlander (1986) by Jake S — 22 Dec 2009
This IS the only one.
As far as I am concerned, this really is the only Highlander movie. I know I can quote old lines like: "There should have been only one" and "I'm Rick James, bitch". I won't though (not counting my openening statement). Ok, I do admit I like the T.V. series, but thats because I am a sad, stupid, pathetic fanboy who has been mentally raped so bad by Highlander 2, that I can't remember anything from 1999-2002.
But anyway, the movie is pretty cool. It's like a video game fantasy movie. The plot is imaginative yet simple. It's basically about Immortals who fight throughout the centuries until the few remaining compete in the Gathering. When the last Immortal stands they gain the Prize. What is the Prize? Is it real? The fighters and you never discover the answers until the end. The only way to kill an Immortal is to cut they're head off and by doing so you gain all of the enemies knowledge, and power through the Quickenening (but this only works for other Immortals). Now that's a cool story.
I ask you, what's better than a movie with Sean Connery playing a Katana weilding Immortal? Nothing that's what. Everything about the movie is cheesey. The soundtrack, props, effects, acting, costumes but it works. I say if you're in the mood for some fun, watch this. Now I'm off to listen to my Queen CDs while flailing my plastic sword.
