Review of Highlander (1986) by David J — 27 Apr 2009
One of the greatest pieces of fantasy cinema of all time. The plot is simple, incredibly cool and immediately interesting. Christopher Lambert is enigmatic, distant, yet charming as the underdog Connor Macloed, and Connery gives an incredibly charismatic performance as Ramirez.
Clancy Brown is an amazing bad guy, who makes the character both detestable and scary at the same time. The flashbacks work perfectly in telling the back story, and the shots of noir 80s New York and sprawling Scottish Highlands makes it accessible aesthetically.
Queen add to the fun with a grand and ott soundtrack fitting to the subject matter. The dialogue is often witty and to the point, and though none of it's perfect, when it slips up it seems to just add to the charm and always makes me laugh.
It's silly nonsense, but at least it makes some sort of sense within a fantasy setting, unlike it's sequels which feature some of the worst pieces of filmmaking of all time. Not for everyone, but definately for me.
