Review of Higher Learning (1995) by Matt J — 07 Dec 2008
Can you make a great film that touches on mutliple topics relevant to youth culture...Singleton proves that you can if you try. Although this is not a perfect film...it is 10 minutes too long...this _is_ a well thought one with engaing performances from all of its leads.
Touching on racism, acceptance, sexuality, peer pressure, growing up, responsibilty and a plethora of other issues... Singleton wants us to take a long hard look at ourselves and despite the now changed fashions and music styles, he achieves this.
..it is only with the final scene (who's to blame) that he loses the plot. Despite this, his final message (put up in type so it can't be missed) still hits home. This is entertaining and provoking.
..the best Hollywood high school movie made so far. This should be watched by all.
